Emma’s love for the ocean began in her hometown of Port Lincoln, South Australia, where she spent her days snorkelling, diving, and cage diving with Great White Sharks. This early connection to the sea has set the course for her life.
“This love for the ocean drew me in, and I knew I wanted a job on the water. Studying marine biology at university was the perfect choice.”
After University, Emma visited Exmouth, Australia and fell in love instantly and wanted to move. “My mum insisted I find a job and a place to live before moving. Within three days, I had both and moved, leaving behind my upcoming honours degree at university.”
Three years later, Emma is thrilled with her decision. After starting working with Ningaloo Glass Bottom Boat, she now works with Ningaloo Blue Dive as a swim guide and marine biologist on the whale shark boat. “I’ve had incredible experiences here with orcas, humpback whales, whale sharks, manta rays, and more!”
Inspirations and Pivotal Moments
Dad’s Influence:
“My dad, Peter, was a national park ranger. His job took us to amazing places across Australia, sparking my love for nature.”
Shark Diving at 12:
At 12, Emma went shark diving in Port Lincoln, she fell in love with how graceful and effortless the GWS looked in the water, and watched in awe from inside the cage. . “Seeing great white sharks up close changed my perspective. I realised they were graceful, not man-eating machines, and my fascination grew.”
Scuba Diving Certification:
Completing her scuba diving certification solidified Emma’s desire to work on the ocean. It also enabled her to travel to many places, including to Raja Ampat in Indonesia for divemaster training. “A place I had always dreamed of visiting.”
