From Reef Breaks to Rest Days: Finding the Balance

We all love the feeling of paddling into a perfect wave, the rush of the drop, and the glide down the line. But let’s be real, surfing can take a serious toll on the body. As much as we’re all about sending it, we’ve also learned that staying stoked in the long run means knowing when to hit pause.

Recovery isn’t about missing out!, it’s about keeping yourself in the water longer, surfing stronger, and feeling good while doing it. After heavy reef sessions, long paddles, or just back-to-back days under the sun, knowing how to rest and reset is key.

Listening to Your Body

Some days, you wake up frothing to surf. Other days, your arms feel like jelly, and your pop-ups are just not popping. That’s your body telling you to slow down. And yeah, we’ve all ignored those signs before, until we learned the hard way that pushing through burnout only leads to sluggish sessions (or worse, injuries).

We used to think taking a day off meant missing waves, but honestly, rest days are what make the best days even better. Letting your body recharge means coming back fresh, strong, and ready to rip.

How We Recover & Reset

Rest days don’t have to mean sitting around doing nothing. Here’s what keeps us feeling good when we’re off the board:

🧘‍♀️ Stretch it out – A quick stretch or some light yoga helps keep the shoulders, hips, and back happy.

🌬️ Breathe & reset – Even a few minutes of breath work can help with lung capacity and keep you calm when the next big set rolls in.

🚶‍♀️ Keep moving – A cruisy beach walk, swim, or even a slow skate keeps the body loose without overdoing it.

Fuel Up, Feel Good

What you put in your body definitely impacts how you surf and recover. After a big session, we go for:

- Healthy fats (avocado, nuts, coconut) for joint support
- Protein (fish, eggs, tofu) to help muscles rebuild
- Hydration, coconut water, electrolytes, and loads of water

Keeping the Vibes High

Just because you’re taking a day off doesn’t mean you can’t stay inspired. Watch surf videos, read a surf book, or just take a second to reflect on your last session. Recovery isn’t about stepping away from surfing, it’s about making sure you can do it for years to come.

So next time your body’s asking for a break, listen to it. Trust us, your next session will be all the better for it✨
